Stand Up for Climate
Comedy as a lever of change and engaging people to take action for climate
Online (Web+social+digital) in the area of South-East Europe/Western Balkan i.e. countries that share common language and history – Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia | 21 June 2021 – 23 September 2021
The project placed three professionally produced full HD stand-up comedy video specials (first of its kind in Croatia) of a well-known stand-up comedian Pedja Bajovic to a designated video streaming platform. With one important difference – the videos are modified in a way to contain tailor-made climate-action content in-between scenes. Video specials are available to the interested audiences but in order to access the videos free of charge, the audience needs to register (with e-mail address only) and to submit a proof of personal pledge and commit to their individual contribution to fighting climate change. So one’s personal climate action record (video, photo, statement, flash-fiction, haiku) is a free-entry to watch the show. In order to assist and further encourage them, we came up with the list of suggested pledges such as: cycle to work, avoid the use of car for local commuting, fewer meat meals over the week, reduced consumption of plastic or single-use packaging, buying only locally produced food directly from farmers, planting a garden or a tree, support tree-planting initiative, write a poem etc.) and we call for their creativity as well. The most interesting and inspiring ones would also be placed on the website and related social networks during or after the campaign. Upon successful registration, the viewer would have 3, 10 or 30 days to watch these three specials for free (the usual price is 3-5 EUR in this region), depends on the number of actions submitted (1, 2, 3 or more). There is an intro video clip prior to the special and a smart-positioning of several graphic/text i.e. meme-type messages throughout the duration of the special. The purpose is to raise awareness and educate citizens about climate and a call to action. The project is a joint collaboration between stand-up comedian Pedja Bajovic and NGO Terra Hub, supported by a grant of the US Embassy Zagreb.
