GREEN STEPS is a long-term environmental-artistic project in which the community is activated towards environmental protection in an innovative and creative way by collecting urban waste and transforming it into massive art installations. The project started 8 years ago and it became our organization’s main action. We decided to make something different that could be not only visually impacting but could also spread a message about climate change, sustainable development, and other environmental topics. The art installations take around half a year to be completed. The local and international volunteers, and entire community is involved in the procees of upcycling and gaining environmental conscience.
In 2016, we had “A Midsummer Night´s Dream”, a steam-punk street installation composed of old washing machine parts. 133 drums were turned into lamps to illuminate the street. The project was spread all over the world and reached thousands of people: in 2017, and in 2018, we collected more than 25 000 empty soda cans, around 400 glass bottles, and two dozen of old bicycle wheels to transform them into artwork.
Because of covid restrictions, we could not exhibit our art installations in 2020, but we were anyway continuing doing what we could do, that´s why, in 2021 we covered old town´s almost all main street and did various installasions and we called “The Message”.
Under the GREEN STEPS project, we also do systematic side activities eco-marathons, street campaigns, movie discussions, creative workshops during the year to engage and educate people about the life cycle of products and its implications on the environment, human health, and economy and to change their consumerism behavious and tunrn them into the enviromentalists.
