The video is conceived as an explainer about what is behind the shocking actions of climate activists, what are their demands and how people have been fighting to draw attention to the environmental agenda since the middle of the last century. The inspiration comes from the case of climate activists from Just Stop Oil when they went viral on social media with images of environmental activists pouring two cans of soup over a Van Gogh painting. Despite the fact that the picture was behind a protective glass, was not damaged, and there were serious demands behind the action of the activists, people called them simply vandals and freaks.
The video, talks about what methods of drawing attention to climate change are considered radical, what wrench actions are, and how soup over a 19th century painting will help draw attention to a global problem. The original language of the video is Russian (English subtitles are available). The video was released on the YouTube channel of DOXA, an independent media against war, dictatorship and inequality. The topic of the climate crisis and opposition to it takes an important place in the activities of DOXA and the journalist personal work. In this video she advocates for ecosabotage as a method that really works.
The purpose of the video: to answer the most common questions about the frightening actions of climate activists. What are the ideas behind their actions? What is the context of their demands and what will happen if we do not strive for the goals of the Paris Agreement? Why pay attention to this problem in such destructive ways? Why such actions do not scare off potential supporters and why are they listened to better than scientists?
