Demystifying Climate Policy: Making COP27 Accessible for Young People
Complex, jargon-heavy international climate policy processes and developments made accessible, transparent and understandable for young people enabling them to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to engage in climate policy and climate action

The project ‘Demystifying Climate Policy: Making COP27 Accessible for Young People’ was initiated and delivered by the non-profit and climate communication organisation ClimaTalk. The project made complex, jargon-heavy processes and developments of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) accessible, transparent and understandable for young people culminating in live coverage at COP27.
Our aim was to make the high-level climate negotiations accessible to young people and to increase their understanding of and engagement in international climate policy. We realised that complicated language and dry presentation of data and information create a barrier for a large part of youth to get involved. Hence, our creative coverage circuited around communicating climate policy and negotiations in a ‘fun’ and approachable way. We developed multiple types of activities with the objective to be inclusive to ‘COP-newbies’ and provide learning opportunities for more experienced ‘COPers’. We also considered different learning types and therefore developed a potpourri of communication materials in written, spoken, and visual formats, plus innovative quizzes and infographics. To reach a wide audience we utilised most major social media platforms, as well as our website.
Overall, we had around 80 project outcomes: two infographics, one glossary booklet, one quiz, and eleven short videos, eleven articles, three interactive online webinars, twenty-one interviews, daily Instagram takeovers at COP27, nine factsheets and eleven photo reporting posts. The project spanned from January 2022 to March 2023. The team consisted of nineteen young volunteers from many different countries, such as Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Kenya, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Tunisia and USA, who all brought in their creative mindsets. The project had no funding, and everyone worked on a voluntary basis. Our team travelling to COP paid for their expenses individually.
