ART3C – Climate, Community, Communication. ‘Montado’ (corkforest) Landscape

An initative to raise awareness through science and art cocreation on the climate change impacts on the Mediterranean ‘Montado’ (oak woodlands), an ecosystem and landscape of high nature, culture and economic value in the south of Portugal

Chamusca | Started on 01/05/2022 – Concluded on 31/12/2023

The ART3C project aims to promote awareness and communication over climate change impacts and effects, joining together art and science, through a collaborative process in a rural context of a mediterranean landscape of Portugal, known as a landscape unit, the ‘Charneca’(heath landscape). This landscape is mostly covered by the ‘Montado’ ecosystem, (evergreen oak woodlands) dominated by the cork oak (Quercus suber), and its biodiversity, ecosystem services and economic values have been widely recognized of outstanding natural and cultural value, with strong identity ties to the resident communities. Climate change in Mediterranean southern European regions show a growing impact on these landscapes, due to rainfall reduction, raising temperatures, successive droughts, aridity, forest fires and loss of vitality. It is important to raise awareness on these effects and influence sustainable attitudes and behaviors towards the care and management of these landscapes, namely in the younger generations.

With this in mind, a local ONG association, the Charneca Landscape Observatory (CLO), brought together a multidisciplinary team, integrating artists, scientists, local schools, community groups, and communication specialists to develop this collaborative project. It is based on a agroforestry property, that acts as a case study unit, on a remote area in the municipality of Chamusca. An active dialog has been fostered between team members, sharing ideas and knowledge, aiming at cocreating a common vision that could inspire the artists in their creative process. Communication with the community is also one of the main aims of the project. The artists develop their works during artistic residences and also coordinate public workshops with students or interest groups. An intermediate and a final public exhibition intend to showcase the work developed and promote discussions between the actors involved. It is also foreseen to publish a catalogue on this project experience.
