The City of Buenos Aires is committed to become carbon neutral, resilient and inclusive by 2050. In order to reach this goal, schools are highly relevant when it comes to training kids as they are considered social agents of citizen commitment to the environment. Participation and the creation of a space for dialogue are fundamental cornerstones.
Given that, the Global Citizenship Program of the Ministry of Education in Buenos Aires City designed an educational gamified proposal called “Race for Decarbonization”. It consists of a card game and a role-playing educational resource for students in the Second Cycle of Primary School and Secondary School. This proposal aims to work with the Climate Change topic in a gamified way in the classroom. This educational proposal is framed in the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically goal 13 “Climate Action” and goal 17, “Partnerships for the goals”. Its focus is to set governmental commitments and citizen action in favor of the climate. The students can learn in teams through role-playing and take part in the decision-making to promote sustainability and the welfare of the inhabitants of an imaginary country by considering social, economic and environmental variables. The game is based on specific and real climate situations that are being faced globally. The dynamic of the game set students as leaders of a country in a decision-making capacity to adapt to or mitigate Climate Change.
